Way back in May this year, Wallows released their album “Model”. I never considered myself a Wallows fan only because I knew one song of theirs and it wasn’t my favorite. But, as I had a radio show in the spring semester of 2024 I grew to like Wallows a bit more and was excited for this album.
Your Apartment & The Build Up

“Your Apartment” was recommended to me when I was looking through alternative music. I initially liked the song, the vocals or at least how the two singers of Wallows (Dylan Minnette and Braeden Lemasters) sung the song. It started this journey of listening to Wallows, and the following singles were also something I enjoyed listening to…even if Apple Music didn’t allow me to hear the last minute of “Bad Dream”.
I also started listening to their EP “Spring” during Spring Break, and I enjoyed the songs off of most of it. Categorizing it, I wouldn’t say they’ve become a favorite band but just a band I enjoy listening to. Glass Animals, AJR, twenty one pilots all have one or two songs that I dislike.
The Songs
The songs on this album help to define that this isn’t a favorite band of mine. No matter how much I listen, I only stay a fan of the singles. The singles were chosen wisely, like Cage the Elephant’s “Neon Pill” album I really only like the singles that came out of the album but in the case of Cage the Elephant I like a few more of the singles.
The Space of Wallows

Wallows reminds me a bit of Cage the Elephant, Nirvana (at least with the singing), and Saint Motel with the sound. When I think of Wallows, I either think of “Are you Bored Yet?” from 2019. It is calming, they sing in just that mumble soft way like Glass Animals and Nirvana mixed together. I like their EP “Spring” because it does sound like spring but also the music is very instrumental and not experimental. Like old rock, and I like it. But, another fun fact is that in the vinyl you can make someone appear in the window of the album cover which I find…very cool.
I can’t really explain the sound of Wallows as I’ve only dipped my toes into their discography and I can’t make a concrete case. I only can examine what I’ve heard and Model, is good. I am very upset though that they haven’t toured near Wisconsin and I’m not counting Chicago.
