The Line dropped last night unexpectedly; or expectedly by some and it’s for Act III of Arcane. The final act drops tomorrow on Netflix and the video for The Line releasing on Monday, but for now let’s talk about the song. This is twenty one pilot’s second single that was made for a piece of media, the first being Heathens back in 2016.
The Song
The song is unique, and doesn’t really feel like anything twenty one pilots has ever released. It sounds raw, vulnerable. It is very light instrumentally, with most of it just being Joseph’s voice and a piano. It does shift to have a beat, within the first 30 seconds but it’s also very soft and moves with the lyrics of The Line.
People have noted its similarities to “Goner” in terms of simplicity but even then have trouble finding a connection to any other previous song, possibly “Before you Start Your Day” which was released back in 2009. Personally, the closest song to it is most of “Smithereens”.
The words themselves are very vulnerable with how Joseph sings it, sounds like he’s being vulnerable and showing a part of himself. There is some sense of weakness and just overall makes it seem super emotional. No matter what happens tomorrow, it will be interesting to see where it goes and where it’s place in the 3 episodes.
Music Video
There will be an edit when the music video is truly released in Monday but right now, we will be analyzing the preview for the music video. First, the video has Viktor and the realm we saw in Act II where Viktor tried to save Vander, and possibly where Viktor will be reborn based on the imagery. But also a separation of Viktor and Sky based on the clip of one pair of hands pulling away from another. Now, we’ll discover on Monday or this weekend what this song’s purpose is for.
